I pull the flier out of my purse.
Itâs a âSaints And Sinnersâ party.
âIt was probably either that or just saints,â Shannon says as we walk arm-in-arm toward where the partyâs happening. We stopped at a thrift store after leaving Eli, but I was so distracted that I almost broke a glass bird that was sitting on one of the shelves. After sifting through a million dresses I finally found a blue dress that just called to me. It looked like it might have been a bridesmaidâs dress, probably from decades ago. I has a corset-style top and a puffy skirt and when I saw it I knew it was what I wanted to wear to the party. I thought making a halo out of pipe-cleaner would be the next logical step but Shannon advised me that the dress was enough and that anyone who looked at me would see immediately that I was an innocent little saint.
âYou know,â I say as we walk under the swaying palm trees, âa lot of saints met some very gruesome ends. To be canonized you have to either perform a miracle or get martyred. You do know what martyrdom entails, right?â
I slice a finger against my throat.
âThatâs very romantic, now can we please get on with our night in one piece?â
âHah. One piece. I believe thereâs a medieval torture device somewhere that would like to have a word with you.â
We get inside the party and Shannon goes to grab us a drink as I walk through the room and look around. Some people are wearing Saints costumes. More are wearing devil horns. Iâm not against parties and Iâll go to one occasionally but itâs also not my first choice. When I told Shannon that some guy in my conversational Italian class said that there was a party, handed me the flier, and said that I should go, she made the decision for us.
âWeâre going,â sheâs said.
She isnât the kind of girl you say no to, but not out of fear or embarrassment. No, on the contrary, Shannon is the kind of person who just seems to know exactly what to do in any given situation. We were put together as roommates freshman year and have be best friends ever since.
Sheâs always on time for stuff. I find that people who are always on time for stuff are implicitly trustworthy.
But...I donât think weâre on time to this party.
From the looks of things, weâve arrived late. Late enough that people are already making out in corners and theyâre at the portion of the night where old nostalgia music is pumping. My theory is that when thereâs dance music, things are still in control. When the dance floor is thumping, you know people are having fun.
Now, on the other hand, when people start swaying and White Snake starts playing, thatâs when you know youâve gotten to the part of the night where people are overly emotional and things can go sideways.
âWhereâs the guy who invited you?â Shannon says as she comes back with two red plastic cups.
