Cindy

I pull the flier out of my purse.

It’s a “Saints And Sinners” party.

“It was probably either that or just saints,” Shannon says as we walk arm-in-arm toward where the party’s happening. We stopped at a thrift store after leaving Eli, but I was so distracted that I almost broke a glass bird that was sitting on one of the shelves. After sifting through a million dresses I finally found a blue dress that just called to me. It looked like it might have been a bridesmaid’s dress, probably from decades ago. I has a corset-style top and a puffy skirt and when I saw it I knew it was what I wanted to wear to the party. I thought making a halo out of pipe-cleaner would be the next logical step but Shannon advised me that the dress was enough and that anyone who looked at me would see immediately that I was an innocent little saint.

“You know,” I say as we walk under the swaying palm trees, “a lot of saints met some very gruesome ends. To be canonized you have to either perform a miracle or get martyred. You do know what martyrdom entails, right?”

I slice a finger against my throat.

“That’s very romantic, now can we please get on with our night in one piece?”

“Hah. One piece. I believe there’s a medieval torture device somewhere that would like to have a word with you.”

We get inside the party and Shannon goes to grab us a drink as I walk through the room and look around. Some people are wearing Saints costumes. More are wearing devil horns. I’m not against parties and I’ll go to one occasionally but it’s also not my first choice. When I told Shannon that some guy in my conversational Italian class said that there was a party, handed me the flier, and said that I should go, she made the decision for us.

“We’re going,” she’s said.

She isn’t the kind of girl you say no to, but not out of fear or embarrassment. No, on the contrary, Shannon is the kind of person who just seems to know exactly what to do in any given situation. We were put together as roommates freshman year and have be best friends ever since.

She’s always on time for stuff. I find that people who are always on time for stuff are implicitly trustworthy.

But...I don’t think we’re on time to this party.

From the looks of things, we’ve arrived late. Late enough that people are already making out in corners and they’re at the portion of the night where old nostalgia music is pumping. My theory is that when there’s dance music, things are still in control. When the dance floor is thumping, you know people are having fun.

Now, on the other hand, when people start swaying and White Snake starts playing, that’s when you know you’ve gotten to the part of the night where people are overly emotional and things can go sideways.

“Where’s the guy who invited you?” Shannon says as she comes back with two red plastic cups.
